IMPORTANT NOTICE TO OUR CUSTOMERS

Due to an ongoing shortage of cod and record high market prices for fresh supply, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily adjust our ordering schedule.

Prices have reached record highs and are continuing to rise, and as a result, we will only be ordering in cod on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. This change is also part of our commitment to more sustainable sourcing policies.

While we believe the Scottish Peterhead cod we use is among the finest available, the Marine Conservation Society has recently downgrading all UK cod stocks to the worst possible "avoid" rating. In response, we will now be sourcing fresh Icelandic and Norwegian cod instead.

To maintain transparency, we display our daily fresh fish information on the blackboard in our shop, and we are always happy to show customers our delivery notes or invoices to confirm the origin of the fish we serve.

We will also be ordering smaller quantities of cod and increasing the availability of more affordable fish alternatives. This means cod may sell out earlier in the day than usual.

If prices continue to rise, there is a possibility that cod may be removed from

our menu entirely.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding and continued support.

But.........really and truly, we’ve had enough of the excuses!

First we were told cod prices were rising because of Brexit. Then it was lockdowns. Then the Ukraine war. Then Iran. Every year there’s another reason why British cod is suddenly “too expensive”.

Now it’s no longer SUSTAINABLE for ordinary businesses or customers to buy!

Our country lands some of the finest cod in the world. Proper premium fish. But now we’re effectively being told not to touch it.  Go look elsewhere, source cheaper alternatives, lower your standards.

So who exactly is eating our British cod then? Because someone still is.

The message feels pretty clear:

Leave the cream of the crop for the masters, and send everyone else toward the cheaper options.

We refuse to play that game.

We will not start buying year-old frozen cod just to keep prices down while the best of our own catch disappears elsewhere. Quality still matters to us, and it matters to our customers.

The Icelandic cod is still excellent and only a few pounds cheaper per kilo. That’s fine, we’ll source elsewhere if we have to. Fresh Icelandic and Norwegian cod from now on.

But don’t tell us the finest fish from British waters is no longer for working people in Britain.
